At the conclusion of an eye examination for a change of reading...

At the conclusion of an eye examination for a change of reading glasses, I was told by the examining doctor that I had cataracts in both eyes. Some material remedies were suggested to slow the development of the cataracts.

As I had relied on Christian Science for more than twenty-five years not only for physical healing but also for the resolution of business, relationship, and employment difficulties, such an approach was not acceptable to my way of thinking and living. Christian Science had shown me that prayer is the only sure way to heal troubles. I knew my need was to gain a better understanding of my relation to God, to grasp more fully the grand fact that man is His spiritual image.

Using the Concordances to the Bible and to Mrs. Eddy's writings, I began a study of references to the words see, sight, vision, and insight. A passage in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy caught my attention (p. 486): "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,—hence their permanence." This stuck with me and was useful in my refusing to accept or be impressed by radio commercials and newspaper advertisements for various procedures to remove cataracts.
