It has been a long time since I attended Christian Science Sunday School, but it was there that I received a solid foundation in Christian Science. How grateful I still am for the dedicated teachers I had. One teacher stands out in memory as showing how Christian Science is very practical. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy states (pp. 112–113): "God is the Principle of divine metaphysics. As there is but one God, there can be but one divine Principle of all Science; and there must be fixed rules for the demonstration of this divine Principle." On pages 392 and 393 of Science and Health are a number of "rules" that my Sunday School teacher suggested we become familiar with. How grateful I have been through the years for this advice, which was so helpful in a healing my daughter had.
One day my husband and I invited our daughter, who was on a break from the university she attended, a fellow student, and his parents to join us for a picnic. The day was especially beautiful; and as we prepared to leave, our daughter and her friend decided to jog back to the entrance of the park. We were to pick them up there. We had driven only partway to the gate when we found our daughter's friend standing beside the road, but our daughter was nowhere in sight. She had become suddenly ill and had gone to a restroom facility.
As we drove back to find and help her, I knew that God was with her and taking care of her. When I entered the restroom she was crying, and I could see that she was extremely frightened. Her arms and legs seemed misshapen, and she was unable to use them or even stand up. I said to her, "Why, Marion, God is even in this dreary place." The sun was setting, and just then a glow of light poured into the room. The sense of God's presence broke the hold of fear and quieted our daughter.
