Following my introduction to Christian Science, I experienced...

Following my introduction to Christian Science, I experienced a physical healing that has been instrumental in shaping the course of my life. I had been experiencing discomfort for over a year from what a physician had diagnosed as acute gastroptosis (a displaced stomach). The effects of this condition were alarming to me. I could eat only small meals and would have to lie down immediately after eating to avoid aggravating the condition. After a period of time, the discomfort became of more and more concern to me.

During one medical appointment I was told that the only remedy was surgery and that even if the operation was successful, I should not consider bearing children. Furthermore, the doctor felt it was important to schedule the operation very soon. We talked about the arrangements, but I had difficulty agreeing to a date for the surgery. I had just taken a long leave of absence from my employment because of illness and thought that a second leave might jeopardize my job.

At that moment I felt confused and in despair. Just then the doctor was called out of the room, and I prayed to God for guidance. I did not really know how to pray at the time, but I believed that there had to be a blessing somewhere in this experience. I had been sitting alone in the doctor's office with my eyes closed. When I opened them, I noticed a book on the doctor's shelf. It was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I had heard of the book before, and I took it from the shelf.
