For eight years I suffered with what had been diagnosed as a bleeding ulcer. I had taken every medication known for ulcers at that time but I was no better. A doctor advised me that an operation was my only hope, although he said there was only a 50 percent chance it would be successful. I was divorced with two small children; there was no one to take care of them if I went to the hospital, and I received no child support. I informed the doctor that I would have to think about the operation and let him know later.

I went back to work and told one of my co-workers about what the doctor had said. My friend was a nice man with a wonderful talent for listening. This time he simply put a little magazine on my desk and said, "Here. You have tried everything else; try this."

It was an issue of the Sentinel. I opened it and began to read. There were quotations from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Many of the statements made sense to me. I paused from my reading long enough to ask my friend where I could find a copy of Science and Health. He reminded me that he had given me the book a month earlier; I had returned it, saying I didn't understand a word of it. He told me that was why he had given me a Sentinel this time.
