Give a happy new year

The city of Boston has a special way of celebrating New Year's Eve. In 1976, residents got together to create a community arts festival called "First Night." In this way the city gives a grand party for all its citizens. The countdown to the new year begins in the afternoon with special performances and happenings for children that include puppet shows, dance, and music with professional artists sharing their talents.

In the evening, theater, ballet, concerts, and other events are held around the city, and some performances take place in Boston's renowned historic churches. The evening starts with a grand parade and finishes with a final display of fireworks over Boston Harbor at midnight. This is truly a family occasion to which everyone who wants to join in is welcomed. There is a real feeling of togetherness and a sharing of each other's joy.

The coming of a new year is a time of nostalgia for some as they look back on happy events. For others it may be a time for hope when they feel they can forget the past and reach toward a more promising future. A new year of itself, however, will not be able to change one's circumstances or outlook on life; yet there is a newness that we can celebrate every day of the year—the newness of life Christ Jesus brought to the world.
