A family business
We can always be about God's business—can always be expressing Him!
During a time of widespread unemployment our son was having difficulty locating a job. Many of his friends had joined their family's businesses, and I was sorry that we didn't have one where our son could work.
One day as I prayed, however, I saw quite clearly that we do have a family business, all of us—the same one that Jesus had! When he was still quite young, Mary and Joseph found him in the temple in Jerusalem, talking with the teachers of the law gathered there. After his mother told him about the trouble she'd had finding him, he asked, "Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" Luke 2:49. I could see that we can turn to God as our real source of employment just as he did. This is a far more reliable way than even the best-intentioned human parent can provide. With this awakening I found my own peace of mind—and our son soon found a job.
As we realize that in reality we all are the children of the one creator—spiritual, useful, and needed—we get a glimpse of one family under the Father's constant care. Even though circumstances may sometimes seem to claim quite the opposite, by persistent, prayerful effort we can prove our true oneness with God and confirm by our own demonstration that there is suitable employment and supply for all. Because man is the well-loved child of God—as we are shown throughout the Bible and as Christian Science emphasizes—our true identity is spiritual, and our real job, our reason for being, is to bear witness to the Father's goodness by expressing His qualities, such as loving-kindness, wisdom, understanding.
