"All of a sudden, it seems, God is anything but dead. Through all the dreck of political mudwrestling, Wall Street amorality, debauched televangelism and battered values, the pull of the Everlasting is making a comeback in the American mind.

"Don't look for evidence of the trend in bulging churches. A recent Gallup Poll found that in the last decade, the percentage of 'unchurched' Americans who don't attend has climbed again, to stand now at 44 percent.

"But religious belief and the thirst for a spiritual life, according to the same poll, are clearly up. In the long waves that trace the nation's shifting focus over time, concern with the spiritual is on the rise....
