"... For most of us in the mainstream, graduate school dissolved the popular image [of Jesus]. No compelling image of the historical Jesus rose to replace it. In part this was because of the hearty skepticism we all learned through our awareness of the complexity of the documents and the bewilderingly diverse results of the quest for the historical Jesus. Perhaps the simplest summary statement of what we learned about Jesus is 'We really can't know much about him.'
