Jesus' idea of matter
A young seaman was in the first Christian Science class ever held, in the 1870s. See Robert Peel, Mary Baker Eddy: The Years of Discovery (Boston: The Christian Science Publishing Society, 1966), p. 247 . His motives weren't necessarily the best. And he didn't have much in the way of spiritual commitment.
He entered the class primarily because his sister asked him to. After a few lessons, however, he cured a girl of dropsy. He was so startled that he left the class! Apparently, the young man's momentary capacity to heal on the basis of spiritual truth resulted from his response to inspired teaching by Mary Baker Eddy.
Such healing may at first seem inconceivable or disturbing to the human mind—to say the least. But to understand a basic point about matter can help us to develop a stronger conviction that it really is possible and it is natural to follow Christ Jesus' command to "heal the sick." Matt. 10:8.
