My mother was a member of The Mother Church and a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I was brought up in Christian Science and began to attend a Christian Science Sunday School at the age of three. I can remember with gratitude some of the healings I had as a child, such as those of whooping cough, warts, and chicken pox. These healings helped to develop an early faith in Christian Science.

When I was eight my mother and I were in a car accident. Both of us were taken to the hospital, but my mother asked that no medicine be given and called a Christian Science practitioner to help us through prayer. We both recovered very quickly, and the wounds we had suffered healed without scars. However, I had received what was considered a very serious head injury, and the doctors had predicted and feared that I might have incurable brain damage which could later result in epileptic attacks.

At the age of fourteen a few minor attacks occurred and by fifteen I began to have more severe seizures. Christian Science was a constant comfort to me, but the epileptic problem continued for many years. Though I joined a branch church and The Mother Church, I lacked spiritual understanding and had only a blind faith. I sometimes found it difficult to understand what Christian Science teaches, and I resisted extra study. But I did believe that God was the only real healer.
