Convinced of sickness, or certain of health?
Many people believe that Christian Scientists ignore sickness. They think Christian Scientists have some kind of notion that suffering is imaginary. Actually, the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, gives the most thorough and comprehensive attention to sickness. In its explanation of healing, it discusses treating and healing not only the effects but the underlying causes of suffering. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being." Science and Health, p. 460.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, together with the Bible on which it is based, helps us to understand the truth of being, the certainty of health as the harmonious condition of God, divine Mind. Through our study of both books we learn that our real being as man is included in God and is His full expression. The Bible declares, "In him we live, and move, and have our being." Acts 17:28.
We also gain a better understanding of the truth of being and its invariable health through the practice of Christian Science. This spiritually awakens us, and thus fits us to discern what is genuinely of God and what is not—what is to be cherished and cultivated, and what is to be overcome. Disease, which is unlike God, cannot be an eternal fact of being. So suffering can and must yield as we express true God-sustained health, through cultivating spiritual harmony and holiness.
