"I am ... the bright and morning star"
—Christ Jesus
We were roiling
in the waves of air
close ... close, yes,
but far enough still
from the landing strip—the goal
(distant lights twinkled—beckoned—in the night)
and our wings
stretched out hard
fighting the wind
as we again circled the other way.
How mankind seemed to be
packed on that plane!
The looker-backward,
looker-forward thoughts
on a close-to-but-not-quite-there voyage ...
full of unfulfilled,
hopefulled, bumpy promises;
floating in an insubstantial plane
of "if only" and "when only" dreams.
I had been looking
the wrong way long enough,
so—at last—
I glanced out my window,
and saw we had been in the light
of the morning star all along.
