Songs in the night

God's love is with us as much at night as it is during the day.

Many people find their nights to be periods of rest and serenity. Night can be a time when the gentle qualities of Soul, God, are seen expressed in the loveliness of stars, the harmony of a quieter city, the peace of the sleeping countryside. Sometimes it seems easier to pray at night when thought is less hurried, less anxious about the day's cares. Beautiful healings often take place during these hours. For other people, though, night may be a most challenging time. Fear of unlawful activity may grow, and sometimes restlessness and pain seem more aggravated.

Many have been helped by the vision caught in the Bible of God's ever-nearness and love for all His children. One such joyous assurance declares, "The Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life." Ps. 42:8. The writer of Job refers to God as giving "songs in the night." See Job 35:10.

"Songs in the night." What a comforting thought to those struggling through the night hours. Dummelow's Bible commentary interprets the verse from Job as saying that God is He "who delivers in the night of trouble, and causes men to sing with joy." J. R. Dummelow, The One-Volume Bible Commentary (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., 1978), p. 315 .
