The "new" medicine
Every decade or so, thought seems to move another notch in understanding the mental nature of disease. And this sometimes results in another branch to the tree of medicine.
In the sixties the media reported frequently on psychosomatic medicine. In the seventies and early eighties holistic medicine (not so much a branch as a collection of approaches) was widely discussed.
And now we're reading about something called psychoneuro-immunology—usually abbreviated to PNI.
