Putting our trust where it counts—in Spirit

How can we be sure of God's power? Christ-healing gives us the proof we need.

Picture a group of animal-skin-clad cavemen preparing for a hunt. When one fearful man holds back, another tells him that he once was protected from a wild animal when he held a certain special stick. Taking the suggestion, the fearful man finds his own special stick, and the hunt proceeds as planned.

The stick in this story had no power of its own to help the caveman, but his faith in it did overcome, at least temporarily, his fear. In the same way, human thought, searching for help beyond itself in times of sickness, is apt to attribute power to that which actually has none.

There is an account in the Bible that shows us something of the importance of understanding where power actually resides. A woman had been ill for twelve years and had spent all that she had on physicians. When she heard about Christ Jesus' healing works, she felt that if she could just touch his clothes, she would be healed. After she had reached him through a crowd and touched his robe, she suddenly knew she was well.
