Bible Notes PULLOUT SECTION

Related to the Lesson-Sermons for January 1988

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by the Christian Science Sentinel as indications of the possibilities for individual research.

The Lord, which dwelleth in Zion (Ps. 9:11)

In the ancient world the Hebrew religion was unique in its concept of God as nonphysical and without representation in the physical realm (see Ex. 20:4, 5). However, the temple built on Mt. Zion was a visible symbol of the presence and power of Israel's God, and the Old Testament figuratively speaks of it as His "house" or "dwelling place" (see, e.g., I Kings 5:5; Ps. 76:2).
