Christian Science came to my notice when I was a young girl
Christian Science came to my notice when I was a young girl. At the time my mother was suffering from bronchitis. A friend gave her an issue of the Sentinel to read, and she was quickly healed. My mother began attending a branch church with her friend, and soon she enrolled my two sisters and me in the Sunday School. Later on I joined a branch church and served as an usher and had many lovely healings.
After I had married, the births of our first two children were especially harmonious as a result of my study of Science and the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner. However, at one point our oldest daughter became ill and I was about to call for help from a practitioner when my husband forbade me and sent for a doctor. Because of his extreme antagonism to Christian Science, and at his request, I gave up the study of Science. I did not study this teaching for a number of years and even gave my Christian Science books to a friend to keep for me. Nevertheless, I continued to feel I was still a Scientist, and Science did help me quite a lot on many occasions and in many ways. I never lost the feeling that God governs and cares for us.
At the passing of my husband after some forty years of marriage, my sister, who had continued in Science, gave me great comfort and support. An article on Christian Science she shared with me greatly helped me overcome grief. I started attending the nearby branch church and truly felt I had come home. Eventually I joined that church and The Mother Church. As a member of the branch church I have served as an usher and Reading Room librarian and am now Second Reader.
