Once I had a very serious heart problem that obliged me to remain in bed for long periods. Then a friend of mine who had been healed through Christian Science spoke to me of this wonderful religion, and so I began to read the book Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and to study the Bible Lessons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. Later I began to attend services at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.

At one point, my husband, who is not a Christian Scientist, insisted that I see a doctor. I agreed to this, and also I was examined by the doctor at the firm I worked for, because of prolonged absences from my job. Both doctors, after taking several X-rays, told me I should submit to surgery. Even then, they said, I had very little hope of living very long—no more than three months.

I refused to accept these terrible prognoses and clung only to the truths of Christian Science I was learning. Many times I affirmed the spiritually scientific facts I found in Science and Health, and I fully trusted that God would heal me.
