It is with a great deal of gratitude that I submit this testimony, attesting to the protection, guidance, and spiritual growth that the study and practice of Christian Science have afforded me.

I was raised in a home where the teachings of Christian Science were lived, and as a youngster I witnessed numerous healings. These included the healing in one night of an apparent severe heart attack suffered by my father. Despite these early experiences, I left Science in my early teens. For a time my life seemed active, exciting, and fun-filled. Occasionally, though, I would think back on my family's healings in Science. And I feel my understanding of divine Truth served to protect me while I was racing power boats, participating in many rugged outdoor activities, and flying tactical jet aircraft in the United States Navy.

After about fifteen years I returned to practicing Christian Science. Shortly thereafter I was passed over for a naval promotion. Feeling very despondent, I wrote to a dear aunt, who is a lifelong Christian Scientist. Her reply included such a strong statement of Truth that the mesmerism of failure was immediately dissolved. I found myself free from resentment and self-pity. A quotation in her letter that was particularly helpful to me is from Philippians (3:13, 14): "This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." The following year I received a naval promotion, and subsequently I enjoyed further promotion and the privilege of command.
