The great events of our time
Not long ago my wife and I were driving over the Jaun Pass in the Alps of Switzerland. High up on the narrow mountain road, we came upon a column of Swiss soldiers. There were hundreds of men on foot. For mile after mile we made our way past the soldiers, the trucks, jeeps, and the horses pulling wagons.
It seemed as if the entire Army was in the field. And although this was only a peacetime maneuver, the vivid picture brought to mind something of what it must have been like forty-five years earlier, when huge troop movements were taking place throughout much of Europe. Then, many nations of the world were engaged in terrible conflict. Events of great moment were occurring that would profoundly alter the course of mankind's history.
Yet, as imposing as past world wars or some other major catastrophe might be, no one would suppose that such are the only significant events that dramatically affect human history. Our times witness many important happenings that stir people's thought and lives, often with good results. We could readily point to valuable discoveries and advances in technology, to progressive political changes, to international negotiations, or perhaps to the unselfish and heroic deeds of certain individuals.
