All my earlier years I was searching for answers to questions regarding religion. I was a member of a church of another denomination—one that did not satisfy me spiritually. A loving grandmother who had studied Christian Science for many years answered my questions when I asked them, but she never tried to push this teaching on me. Although she had presented the family with a copy of the Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, it was many years before I opened these books to study them.

Before I became interested in this Science I had a very difficult time with my first pregnancy. I was sick for the entire nine months, then had a long, painful time in labor. For weeks after the birth, I suffered from a physical disorder. And for six months there was a problem with the infant, during which time my husband and I walked the floors caring for the child day and night. All this left me extremely fearful of becoming pregnant again.

Four years later we thought of enlarging our family. I prayed a great deal over this, as I could not seem to dispel the fear of going through another pregnancy.
