My mother brought Christian Science into our home and enthusiastically...

My mother brought Christian Science into our home and enthusiastically tried to convince our family of the healing message of the Christ. Her efforts attracted little serious interest. In fact, my brother and I planned to discourage her in every way from studying Christian Science, something we believed was an imposition on her and our family. Finally I decided to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, to prepare myself with opposing arguments. How surprised I was to find that the book's message was sensible, giving me clear insight into God's very own Word. There followed years of joyful reading and study, but they were without deep consecration or practical application. Yet I earnestly desired to understand and demonstrate the teachings of Christian Science.

When my own children were very young, I wholeheartedly began my journey "from sense to Soul" as a beautiful hymn indicates (see Christian Science Hymnal, No. 64). The healings and instances of protection were many and varied. I will always value the availability and healing work of the Christian Science practitioners who helped me along the way. I learned that it is important to study the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) each day. This helps to prepare thought to accept and understand the presence and power of God, and to deny anything unlike Him. My study of the lesson early in the day has proved to be a blessing throughout the years.

One morning, after I had resisted the temptation to put off this study until later, I became absorbed with the truths in the ninety-first Psalm, as presented in the lesson for that week. At the same time, our four-year-old son decided to wind our grandfather clock as he had seen his older brother do, by pulling the heavy brass weights upward. Instead, he pulled the weights forward and brought the clock down on himself. There was a crash and the child screamed. Fragments of glass flew everywhere.
