True consent
Just as a C.O.D. package might arrive
ready for payment and signature,
I almost signed for the triple-knotted lie
of bitterness, resentment, and reaction,
by believing it had a reason for arriving
and by giving it the currency of acceptance.
Just short of bringing it over the threshold of believability
I looked at the label
and found it wasn't mine to accept,
for it was addressed to:
mortal man, reactor,
listener to human opinions,
city of vulnerability.
