The light that illumines our lives

No one doubts that the sun will still be shining next year. Yet there are places on earth where its beams may not be seen for weeks. And there are places that feel very little of its warming rays. This is symptomatic of all material things; they are limited.

There is, however, a light beyond the sun, which always shines regardless of any earthly condition. The Bible tells us that John "was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." John 1:8, 9. Christ Jesus came, sent by God, to manifest this holy light with undimmed amplitude. The light John proclaimed was Jesus' spiritual nature, the Christ itself, which Jesus manifested. This is the light that illumines our lives.

Christ Jesus confirmed this. He said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12. And he made it plain that all who follow him are endowed with this Christ light when he said: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt. 5:14–16. He expected his followers to become aware of their true, spiritual nature as man, God's likeness, so they could put into practice man's God-given ability.
