Many years ago, while serving as a laboratory technician in the United States Army Medical Corps, I accidentally ingested cyanide during a laboratory test. But I had no fear.

I was ordered to report for sick call, and once there I was informed that I was to be sent to the hospital for treatment. I did not wait for the transfer but went to the Chief of Medical Service. He sent me home with written instructions on how to care for myself. No medication was given, ordered, or taken. I then put in for a discharge from the service.

The order for my discharge came just a few days before Christmas. I was given a thorough physical examination by a team of medical officers, after which I was told that I could expect to live not more than two years. (I'd been informed that my kidneys had been badly damaged by the cyanide.) Over the doctors' objections, the Chief of Medical Service approved my discharge. He also gave me comprehensive dietary instructions. The discharge turned out to be one of the finest Christmas presents I ever received. As the saying goes—"Man's extremity is God's opportunity."
