The demand for something better

For centuries people searched the face of the sky, gazed across the surface of the sea, and yet continued to misinterpret what they saw—the sun seemed to travel from horizon to horizon, the earth was flat. It wasn't enough to stand and stare. To be free of the limitations of such ignorance, something better would be demanded.

Of course the era of a "flat earth" has passed into history, and physical science has more accurately explained the nature of our solar system. But the need for freedom from limitations—from lack, futility, disease, sin, and death—surely still requires something better of us. And today, Christian Science is presenting to thoughtful Christians the demand that every misinterpretation which assumes that life is fundamentally material must cease to hold sway in our conceptions of reality.

If humanity is to progress beyond finity and mortality, fresh perspectives and a radically different way of living are required. An understanding of the spiritual nature of true being—of man's life in God, infinite Soul—will have to replace outmoded misconceptions of reality and substance bound up in matter.
