Early one morning both my eyes became intensely painful, and my vision grew dim and blurred. At first I faltered, wondering whether to carry on with my study of the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) or pray specifically about the eye problem. Swiftly it came to me that the lesson that week was based on the Sermon on the Mount (see Matt., chaps. 5–7) and that there could be no better healing power than the purifying thoughts which lay behind that teaching. So I set to work.
I denounced the symptoms as lies that would claim to prevent me from enjoying my morning communion with the Christ, Truth. Then, very slowly, with the aid of a powerful reading lamp, I read the lesson, pondering the Bible citations, together with the correlative passages from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I took care to consider each line intently. It was a joyous struggle, and by the time I was almost done reading the lesson, I suddenly realized that all pain had dispersed and there was a slight improvement in my eyesight.
Afterward, when I was shaving, I noticed that one eye was completely bloodshot. I wondered if I should phone a Christian Science practitioner. Then it came to me that I could trust the progress resulting from the prayerful work I'd done thus far. So I decided to carry on by myself under Mind's guidance. And I resolved not to look at my eyes anymore. For the next few days, study of the lesson brought lessening discomfort. My thought was particularly directed to Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question "What is man?" on pages 475–477 of Science and Health. It includes these lines (p. 477): "Whatever is material is mortal. To the five corporeal senses, man appears to be matter and mind united; but Christian Science reveals man as the idea of God, and declares the corporeal senses to be mortal and erring illusions."
