Cherishing the babe of Christian healing: the need today

Nearly a century ago, Mary Baker Eddy wrote: "In different ages the divine idea assumes different forms, according to humanity's needs. In this age it assumes, more intelligently than ever before, the form of Christian healing. This is the babe we are to cherish." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 370.

Over the years since these words were written, the ongoing tide of Christian Science healing has brought blessing to countless families. It has also helped rekindle the bright promise of true spiritual healing for Christianity as a whole. Today there is a particular need in the United States—a need which all Christian Scientists will want to know about—to cherish this babe of Christian healing more deeply than ever.

The specific need now is to curb the potential for legal encroachment on the practice of Christian Science, especially for children. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, felt strongly that legislative protection for our healing ministry is both in consonance with the Constitution of the United States and helpful to our Cause. As she stated in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, "The Constitution of the United States does not provide that materia medica shall make laws to regulate man's religion; rather does it imply that religion shall permeate our laws." Miscellany, p. 222.
