FOR CHILDREN
You can only feel what God made: good
Late one night Maryanne woke up. She got up and climbed in bed with her mother. There was a pain in her ear, and she couldn't help crying. She snuggled into her mother's arms, and listened to her say "the scientific statement of being" out loud. See Science and Health, p. 468. As Maryanne listened she was able to stop crying.
Mom explained how the words applied. Maryanne liked the part where Mrs. Eddy says, "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness." Pain could not be a part of God or His likeness. Mom told her, "You can only feel what God makes—life, truth, love, peace, and comfort."
Maryanne and Mom said the Lord's Prayer together. See Matt. 6:9-13. Christ Jesus gave us this prayer in the Sermon on the Mount. Mom added the spiritual sense of each line, which Mrs. Eddy gives in Science and Health. Science and Health, pp. 16-17 . When they came to "Thy kingdom come" and Mom read, "Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present," Maryanne was sure that meant God was all around, protecting and caring for His children. Praying gave Maryanne a good feeling. She saw that pain couldn't make her believe she wasn't God's perfect child.
