Assertions that heal
Christ Jesus was the most decisive person mankind has ever known. He spoke with authority; he acted with authority. And yet there has never been a more gentle or humble man on earth.
When the Master rebuked the wind, a calm fell over the sea. See Matt. 8:26 . When he told the man to stretch forth his withered hand, it was healed. See Matt. 12:13 . When he commanded an individual who had died to arise, the young man sat up and spoke. See Luke 7:14, 15 . We don't know the full tone or strength or flavor of Jesus' voice when he spoke, but we know it carried Christly power. And we know the response was dramatic.
What is the difference between assertions made by the Master during his ministry, and those we ourselves might make? Mrs. Eddy, a devoted follower of Jesus, offers to those who would heal as the Master directed, this insight in Science and Health: "Like the great Exemplar, the healer should speak to disease as one having authority over it, leaving Soul to master the false evidences of the corporeal senses and to assert its claims over mortality and disease." Science and Health, p. 395.
