The rainbow
Early one fine autumn morning as I looked out from our front door, I could see a lovely rainbow over the calm waters of the bay. There was great beauty in that scene, with the colors blending wonderfully and fading out softly at the extremities. This gave rise in me to quiet contemplation.
A little later when I glanced out of the window, the rainbow had disappeared. Where had it gone? Conditions in the atmosphere had changed so that they no longer produced the phenomenon of beauty.
As I settled down to study that week's Bible Lesson, In the Christian Science Quarterly. which was on the subject "Substance," I came to the place in the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, that reads, "Thought will finally be understood and seen in all form, substance, and color, but without material accompaniments." Science and Health, p. 310. How needed it is for us in our journey Spiritward to consider the human scene around us without the hardness, the unyielding qualities, that we give to matter. Think of Christ Jesus feeding five thousand people with five loaves and two fishes! See Matt. 14:15-21. And he could have fed fifty thousand if the need had been there; for infinite Mind, the only real cause and creator, knows no limitation. Perhaps we should read again, for example—a little more slowly—that inspiring account in the Bible of Peter's prison chains loosening and iron gates opening of their own accord. See Acts 12:1, 3-11.
