The divine basis of doing one's duty
Do we ever stop to consider why most men and women persist in carrying out their lawful duties in daily life? They do so even when these duties must be performed under difficult conditions and at considerable risk and discomfort to themselves.
Take, for example, the remarkable feats performed by members of the land, sea, and air rescue services that are reported from various parts of the world. What inspires and motivates these intrepid individuals? It is the influence of divine Spirit, Soul, impelling noble thought and action to promote human good.
Christian Science explains that actually Spirit, God, is infinite—all true being. It shows that man as the reflection of his Maker, divine Truth and Love, is governed by the divine will, or law. In her book Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "Christian Science reveals Truth and Love as the motive-powers of man." Science and Health, p. 490. Therefore when human beings are motivated by the spirit of Christ to perform good deeds, they are yielding to, obeying, the law of their true being.
