Four years ago, while my husband and I were...
Four years ago, while my husband and I were visiting friends in California, I became very ill with a fever and had extreme pain in one of my breasts. For several months prior to this I had been aware of a large lump in the affected breast, but it had not given me any pain so I hadn't prayed about it. Because I was unable to sleep, the first night was spent just pondering "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (see page 468).
The next morning I could hardly eat anything, so I feigned having a small appetite until we could politely leave our friends' home. Soon we headed for our home, eleven hundred miles away.
Prior to my study of Christian Science, while in the hospital for the delivery of our first child, I had had a similar problem with the other breast. At that time I'd had surgery and was relieved of the pain, but this time I was determined to rely entirely on Christian Science—for complete and permanent healing. When the memory of that first experience would try to come to mind, I would counter it by affirming the truth of this verse from the Bible (Heb. 4:12): "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
