Over three years ago, following an operation, I found myself in a very bad state of health. I suffered with severe rheumatic pain in my legs and feet and was able to walk only with the help of two canes. Also, because I had had curvature of the spine since childhood, which had worsened with advancing age, I walked with a stoop. A displaced vertebra caused me additional pain. It became clear that the doctors were unable to cure me.

One day during a visit, my cousin, a Christian Scientist, drew my attention to this teaching and gave me the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. She also gave me the address of a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately agreed to pray for me at my request.
