Keep the true tone

A young man had been through a particularly disturbing incident that had left him feeling confused and besieged. He approached an experienced Christian Scientist to talk over an entirely different problem, but even before the young man began to speak, he felt the pressing turmoil and darkness fade rapidly away. He felt surrounded and supported by love and peace, as if embraced in a warm and gentle sea.

What had happened? No words had been spoken, no conscious attempt to heal had been made by the practitioner, and yet the young man had experienced a powerful, palpable force that had erased his torment. Here was seen the fundamental power of holy thought, an agent needing no material medium to give itself expression and heeding no material limit in its doing of good. Here was evidence of God, divine Love, in action.

David must have known something of the power of God-inspired thought. As a newcomer to the royal court of Saul, he was called on to soothe the mental darkness of the monarch by playing on a harp. The Bible records, "So Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him." I Sam. 16:23. Surely such a comforting and healing influence did not come from the music alone, but rather from David's pure thought, filled with heartfelt love of God.
