Early in my study of Christian Science I was seized by a serious illness. At first I was plagued with pain each morning throughout my body, and I would return home from work earlier than usual to go to bed, feeling exhausted. In less than two weeks I could no longer move about. Most of the time I must have been feverish, for in the morning the sheets on my bed would be wet with perspiration. I lost quite a bit of weight, and when I did manage to stand up, it was with intense pain.

My family are not Christian Scientists, and their alarm prompted them to call a doctor without consulting me. Later, after I had gained my freedom from this condition, they told me that the doctor had diagnosed rheumatic fever and that he had offered little hope that I would survive. He also predicted that if I did manage to stay alive I would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life.

In desperation, my brother told me he was going to have me placed in a hospital. When I objected, he threatened to take me there by force. But God gave me just the right words to comfort and assure him that I was receiving excellent care through the prayer of the Christian Science practitioner who was helping me.
