I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing but for a better understanding of God. The chapter "Prayer" in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy opened the way, and for more than forty years Christian Science has blessed me.

One early experience so impressed me with the power and ever-presence of God as divine Love, that I have never forgotten it. This concerns a fire that broke out on our ranch on a hot, windy July morning in 1943, when the temperature had soared over 100°F for days. The fire started in front of the barn that stood between our house and a tenant house occupied by a family with two children. Soon it spread through the dry grass to a clump of manzanita bushes and a grove of live oak trees, where it blazed out of control.

Because of wartime restrictions, we had been unable to get a telephone, and the nearest one was five miles away. The fire was advancing toward our house as I got into the car to go and phone for help. My husband and a neighbor from the tenant house were in town ten miles away.
