The Golden Rule

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus admonished his followers, "All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets." Matt. 7:12. For years I thought the Golden Rule meant only that we should humanly do for others as we would like others to humanly do for us.

Once, however, after feeling disgruntled with the lack of consideration shown by a family member, I caught a glimpse of the spiritual sense of Christ Jesus' admonition. This transformed the situation.

The change didn't come easily. I struggled to let go of my shallow concept of this person as selfish and self-centered and to deny the evidence of thoughtlessness. I tried to replace all this with the true view of the individual, in unity with God, divine Principle—to see that individual as loving, pure, compassionate.
