Although I was a member of a family that held fast to prevailing cultural traditions, I was early introduced to the Bible at the missionary school where I received my entire education. This study of the Scriptures later led to my own investigation of various philosophies and religions, including Christian Science. I was attracted to this teaching right away, but it wasn't until seven years later that I felt ready to take a stand for Science as my way of life. I became a member of The Mother Church three years after that and at the same time joined the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, in my city.

This choice to rely on God for everything proved to be a turning point in my life. Character traits changed for the better as I plunged into working for the branch church, serving for a number of years as head usher and as a member of several other committees. A brief term as treasurer, work as a Sunday School teacher and then as a member of the executive board, brought me in close contact with church activities and taught me to really apply the truths this scientific healing method rests upon.

Gratitude for Christian Science always remained in my heart from the days prior to my joining The Mother Church. At that time I secured a satisfying job, which I still hold today and have held for more than a decade. This sense of gratitude grew as I applied scientific truths in more and more areas of my life—for both physical and mental problems. At different times I had the help of Christian Science practitioners—each one a shining example, inspiring me to follow Paul's counsel (I Thess. 5:21): "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."
