While we were camping with some friends in Yosemite National Park,...
While we were camping with some friends in Yosemite National Park, several people became quite sick with symptoms of flu. Upon our return home, I developed the same distressing symptoms. It was apparent that I hadn't thoroughly replaced the suggestion of illness with truths of man's real nature as God's child. At my request, a Christian Science practitioner prayed for me and helped me discern that real being is purely spiritual.
I pondered several passages in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. One was "the scientific statement of being" (p. 468). Another was on page 475, where our Leader writes: "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness." The symptoms soon disappeared. The next day was spent quietly studying the Bible and writings of Mrs. Eddy, and wholeheartedly affirming my spiritual identity.
When I woke the following morning, I felt entirely well. Rejoicing in my freedom, I walked to the living room, anticipating a joyous session of reading and studying the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly. I happened to glance out our patio window at the beautiful flowers blooming in our backyard. Because a plant in a redwood tub blocked my view somewhat, I decided to go out and move it a little. But when I bent over to pick up the tub, I felt a terrible pain in my lower back and was unable to straighten up.
