My childhood was spent in a small town where there was no Christian Science Sunday School to attend. Yet my mother, a devout Christian Scientist, early instilled in me a genuine love for the powerful truths that had sustained her and her family through many testing times.

When I was ten years old, I was hired as regular pipe organist for one of our local Protestant churches. Many of my friends attended that church, and I joined them in youth activities there. For a while I lost interest in Christian Science.

Later my family moved to a large metropolitan area. Around that time I was faced with a serious case of carbuncles. This painful condition brought about a turning point in my life, because it motivated me to begin daily study of the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly. I gave no consideration to seeking medical treatment but relied entirely on scientific prayer. There was a complete healing of the carbuncles, and after that I enjoyed several years as a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School before reaching the age of twenty. I also benefited from joining The Mother Church and a branch church while I was still in high school. Over the years there have been unlimited opportunities to make use of the fundamental truths learned in Sunday School.
