I am told that shortly after my birth an orthopedic surgeon placed casts on my legs. He also informed my parents that when it was time for me to begin walking, I would require specially designed shoes. Instead of accepting the surgeon's verdict, my mother contacted a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to pray for me. The casts were soon removed, and I was quickly healed. Later I was able to walk perfectly.
A few years ago, while I was living in an overseas country, an abnormal growth developed near my ear. On top of this, I began having severe pain in my stomach and side. Because I'd felt generally misunderstood and unjustly treated by some of the local people, I turned to God in search of comfort as well as healing. In my extremity I was especially glad to have attended the Christian Science Sunday School as a child, for that training now enabled me to rely firmly on the basic truths of God and man. A verse from one of Mary Baker Eddy's poems brought a measure of comfort (Poems, p. 14):
