The Monitor and prayer for the world

Does prayer for the world really help? I asked myself that question when I began a daily project of praying for the world. Reading The Christian Science Monitor kept me informed and increased my knowledge of the world and its events; but I decided this was not enough. To really love my neighbors in the world, I needed to do more. I wanted to help and to heal.

As I read each issue of the Monitor, I chose one situation or topic that stood out to me as needing special prayer. Then I prayed. I prayed by knowing that God, good, is actually in charge of all; I realized that according to the law of God, people and nations are not at the mercy of material conditions. In Christian Science the synonyms for God are Mind, Principle, Love, Life, Truth, Spirit, Soul. I applied each synonym of God as an antidote to the troubles experienced by nations and groups of individuals.

I prayed also to see that each false belief that claimed power to govern specific events was in fact a lie, powerless to challenge God's omnipotence. Such a denial replaces in thought each discord, or illusion, with the facts of God's spiritual government.
