My junior year in college was marked by an earnest search for the meaning of life and the true nature of the universe. Then I found Christian Science. What joy, freedom, and abundant good this teaching has brought me!

As a child I'd been thoughtful and studious, full of questions about God. Despite my upbringing in an orthodox Protestant religion, I could never believe that the Almighty creates man a sinner, then punishes him for weaknesses inherent in a divinely bestowed, faulty character.

College introduced me to the works of many famous writers and philosophers of the past centuries. As I read these and studied the natural sciences and various religious doctrines, I was faced with numerous contradictions and illogical conclusions. The religion I had known since childhood didn't answer my questions either. Sensitive to the confusion and evil that seemed so prevalent in the world, I became depressed and confused. Finally I abandoned the conviction, formed in my youth, that God is good and loving. I had reached a conclusion: either there is no God or, if there is, He just doesn't care about mankind. This was the only way I could explain the rampant injustice and evil that I saw around me.
