The day before my family left to go home from a vacation one summer, I got a sore throat. When I first noticed it, I affirmed relevant spiritual truths I could recall from that week's Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, then continued on with the day's activities. It became increasingly difficult for me to swallow, however, and as a result I slept little that night. As we drove home the next day, both my parents and I prayed earnestly to realize that as Life's idea I could never manifest anything less than perfect health and freedom. Since the problem persisted, I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful treatment as soon as we got home.

During the next three or four days the symptoms became more alarming—I was hardly able to talk, swallow, or sleep. This frightened me; consequently, I saw that fear was had to be eradicated. One way I began to discredit fear was to think of it as "false evidence appearing real." As a result of this I realized that since fear has no spiritual foundation, it does not have any real power except the illusive power I might unwittingly give to it.

Because I could do little else, I spent the majority of the next few days and nights reading every available Christian Science periodical. Through this I gained a clearer sense of God and my relationship to Him. I recognized that man's perfection and well-being are always intact, no matter what the physical appearance to the contrary.
