Christian Science has provided me with a new...

Christian Science has provided me with a new enthusiasm for life, freedom from a drinking problem, and the assurance that blessings and happiness accompany an increased understanding of God.

Over five years ago I returned to the study of Christian Science after an absence of about twenty years. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 322): "The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love." Those words describe the reason for my return. My life had reached such a depressed state that I occasionally contemplated suicide. It was during one of those depressed conditions that I called my family, miles away, for help. They reminded me that the help I needed I already possessed in the Bible and Science and Health.

After that conversation I immediately purchased a Christian Science Quarterly and began daily to read the Bible Lesson. My life received new direction. Thoughts of self-destruction left me, and the situation that brought the depression no longer concerned me. There were some habits I had picked up over the years that needed healing, so I began going to church. Before I qualified for membership, I served as pianist in the Sunday School and as organist for the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. This work precipitated my healing of a drinking habit of many years duration.
