A bladeless knife without a handle

When I was a child, riddles were the fashion, and one of my favorites went like this. "What is the definition of nothing?" Answer: "A bladeless knife without a handle." All those words describing nothing!

The term "nothing" is an important one to Christian Scientists. Basic to a grasp of this Science is an understanding, at least in a degree, of the allness of God and the nothingness of anything apart from Him, whatever its nature. These fundamental truths have biblical authority. We read in Isaiah, "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else." Isa. 45:22. And the healing work of Christ Jesus recorded in the Gospels actually proves God's infinitude.

This omnipresence of good, God, allows for nothing alien to Him. Creating all to express Himself, divine Mind, the Father has endowed His creation of spiritual ideas with His own substantiality. But anything that appears to exist outside this creation fails the test. It is without authority, legitimacy, and reality, regardless of what one's beliefs say to the contrary. Mortal mind, or so-called material mentality, makes presumptuous claims for evil and matter, often attaching long and impressive descriptions to the claims. Don't be impressed!
