As I approached adolescence, I became afflicted with what doctors said was epilepsy. My father, who adhered to no specific religion, spent many thousands of dollars on medical treatments and specialists trying to discover the cause and cure for this disease. Finally, it was determined medically that I didn't have epilepsy but a form of convulsions, a condition thought to stem from birth.
My mother knew something of Christian Science from her sister, who was a student. But I was not permitted to receive Christian Science treatment because of my father's strong objections to it. Yet through the years, although I depended on pills to control the illness, I had a desire to be healed through divine Science, and to become a member of The Mother Church and a branch church.
Some time later, after my father's death, we moved to Los Angeles. A cousin, who was a Christian Science practitioner, lived there. My mother began to study Science seriously, and eventually she became a church member.
