Quite a few years ago I lost a close friend and two good acquaintances. In each case, the cause of death was diagnosed as cancer. The symptoms and suffering associated with this disease became embedded in my thought. In fact, a latent fear of disease was so deep that when I became aware of an internal growth in my body I panicked and was near nervous collapse.

I considered myself a loyal Christian Scientist—a hardworking church member—and I wanted to rely on Science for healing. But the seriousness of this claim so alarmed me that I began to be afraid my family would insist on medical treatment. I literally shook with fear as mortal mind dramatized the Hollywood-type scenario of a devoted mother dying bravely and leaving her young family.

It was a Christian Science practitioner who, through her spiritual conviction and comforting awareness of the Christ, convinced me I did not have to die; and it was my mother who gently urged me to reread Mary Baker Eddy's profound book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, with an attitude of "just being grateful that it is the truth."
