One day a few years ago I climbed a tree in our yard to pick cherries. In my eagerness, I forgot to hold on properly, lost my balance, and fell from the tree. When I came to on the ground, I saw that my upper right arm was broken. My mother, who found me lying on the grass, brought me into the house and telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for help. At that time I was twelve years old and had been attending the Christian Science Sunday School for six years.

It was decided to have a surgeon set the arm, but he found that the break was so complicated it could only be set in traction. Thus I had to spend several weeks lying in bed. After this period of time, healing was not evidenced, and I was informed that the bone had to be pinned. At that moment it became clear to me that I could not depend on material and spiritual remedies at the same time. I refused the operation and was released from the hospital with my arm in a cast. The prognoses of the doctors were dismal. They predicted that the arm could never again be used properly.

A practitioner prayed for me, and my mother and I studied and prayed as well. I found two sentences from a Christian Science pamphlet especially helpful. One stressed that we need never outline the course of a spiritual idea, and the other brought out that there are no fragments in divine Mind's pattern. Both these truths strengthened my confidence that the arm would become normal and that no fragments would remain.
